When planning our romantic getaway, my partner and I were searching for a destination that offered a blend of history, nature, and unique experiences. After some research, we settled on Pula, a charming coastal city in Croatia known for its ancient Roman ruins, stunning beaches, and vibrant local culture. It quickly became clear that Pula had everything we were looking for, romantic sunsets, delicious food, and plenty of activities to keep us engaged throughout our trip. Here’s how we spent ten magical days in Pula, discovering its hidden gems and making unforgettable memories together.
Day 1: Gotoistria – Kayak Tour

We began our Pula adventure with an exhilarating kayak tour organized by Gotoistria. Arriving early in the morning, we were eager to explore Pula’s stunning coastline. The tour, which we had been looking forward to for months, took us through hidden coves, past dramatic cliffs, and along serene, untouched beaches. Our guide led us to a fascinating sea cave and provided snorkeling gear to explore the crystal-clear waters.

Kayaking together was both exhilarating and intimate, offering moments of peaceful solitude amid the stunning backdrop of the Adriatic Sea. The experience of sharing quiet stretches of water and discovering hidden spots made it a truly romantic adventure. Day 2: Arena Pula

On our second day, we explored the iconic Arena of Pula, one of the most well-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. Dating back to the 1st century AD, this ancient marvel is not only a testament to Pula’s rich history but also a breathtaking architectural masterpiece. As we wandered through the Arena, we were transported back in time, imagining the grandeur of the events that once took place within its mighty walls. Whether you're a history buff or just looking to soak in some culture, the Arena is an absolute must-see when visiting Pula.

Romantic Escape for two
We timed our visit to the Arena just before sunset, and it turned out to be one of the most romantic moments of our trip. As the sun slowly dipped below the horizon, the golden light filled the ancient amphitheater, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene. Standing together in this historic monument, surrounded by the warm glow of the setting sun, felt like a moment out of time. It was a truly unforgettable experience, adding a touch of magic to our journey through Pula.

3. Day 3: Lungomare
Plan and location
Our third day was spent strolling along the Lungomare, a beautiful coastal promenade that stretches several kilometers along Pula’s coast. We took a leisurely walk, stopping to swim at some of the inviting beaches along the way. We were most amazed by Gortanova Cove, where we decided to swim in the beautiful, clean, and clear sea! After swimming, we enjoyed a cocktail at the beach bar above the cove.

Holding hands as we strolled along the Lungomare, with the sea breeze in our hair and the sound of waves lapping against the shore, made for a wonderfully romantic experience. We enjoyed another sunset in Pula in this location also!

4. Day 4: Verudela
Plan and Location
On the fourth day, we explored the Verudela Peninsula. We started with a walk along the promenade, followed by a coffee break at Saccorgiana, a charming beach bar with stunning views. In the afternoon, we visited the Pula Aquarium, located in the historic Fort Verudela. The aquarium features a diverse range of marine species from the Adriatic Sea and beyond, set against the backdrop of the 19th-century fort. After exploring the fascinating exhibits and learning about marine conservation, we continued our adventure with a visit to the canyon and Hawai beach, where we spent the rest of the day.

Sipping coffee together while overlooking the sea at Saccorgiana beach was one of the most peaceful and relaxing moments of our trip. We didn't miss another beautiful sunset on the Canyon also!

5. Day 5: Boat Trip

On our fifth day, we set out on an exclusive boat trip from Pula's charming harbor, cruising along the beautiful Istrian coastline. The boat offered a comfortable and intimate setting as we sailed into the Adriatic, guided by a knowledgeable captain. We were thrilled to spot dolphins playing in the waves and enjoyed stunning views of Pula’s historic skyline. The trip included a delicious onboard dinner, featuring local Istrian dishes, all while the sky transformed into a breathtaking sunset. This experience was truly the highlight of our trip.

Watching the sun set over the horizon from the deck of the boat was incredibly romantic. The gentle rocking of the boat, the sound of the waves, and the vibrant colors of the sunset created an unforgettable atmosphere. This intimate escape allowed us to truly connect and enjoy a perfect evening together, making it one of the most cherished moments of our trip.

Day 6: Brijuni National Park

On our sixth day, we explored the Brijuni Islands, a stunning archipelago of fourteen small islands that make up Brijuni National Park. Just a short boat ride from Pula, these islands are celebrated for their unspoiled natural beauty and rich historical significance. The main island, Veliki Brijun, is a treasure trove of attractions, offering a perfect blend of nature and history.

With only the sounds of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves around us, we experienced a serene and intimate connection with nature and each other. Day 7: Pula’s historical sites and city center

Day seven was dedicated to immersing ourselves in the rich history of Pula. We started our day by visiting some of the city’s most iconic historical landmarks, including the majestic Cathedral, the ancient Roman Forum, The Twin Gates of Pula, the beautifully preserved Augustus Temple, and the impressive Arch of the Sergii. Each site offered a unique insight into Pula’s storied past, showcasing its blend of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance influences. After a day of exploration, we treated ourselves to a memorable dinner at Hook&Cook, a local gem known for its exceptional seafood.

After a day filled with historical exploration, ending the evening at Hook&Cook was the perfect romantic retreat. The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere, coupled with its delightful cuisine, provided a wonderful setting for us to unwind and enjoy each other’s company. The intimate ambiance and the flavors of the region made this dinner a fitting and unforgettable conclusion to our day.

Day 8: EatIstria Cooking Classes & Wine Tours

We spent our eighth day diving into Istrian culinary culture with EatIstria's cooking class and wine tour. Set in the picturesque Istrian countryside near Pula, we learned to prepare traditional dishes using fresh, local ingredients. After cooking, we enjoyed a wine tour that showcased some of the region’s best wines, visiting local vineyards and cellars.

Day 9: Kaštel and Pula's Underground Tunnel
On our ninth day, we visited the Kaštel, a historic fortress perched on a hill overlooking Pula. Known for offering some of the best panoramic views in the city, Kaštel is an ideal spot for both history enthusiasts and those looking to capture stunning vistas. We planned our visit for the late afternoon to experience the golden hour, ensuring we could witness the sunset from atop the fortress walls.
But, before reaching the fortress, we embarked on a journey through the fascinating underground tunnels of Pula, known as Zerostrasse. These tunnels, initially built as wartime shelters, provide a unique path leading directly to the base of the Kaštel. Walking through these historical corridors, we could feel the weight of history beneath our feet, as each step brought us closer to the majestic fortress above.

Day 10: Lokalitet
Plan and location
On our final day in Pula, we explored Lokalitet, a vibrant local market that perfectly captures the essence of Istria. This bustling market is known for its fresh produce, artisanal goods, and authentic Istrian flavors. As we wandered through the stalls, we took the opportunity to pick up some unique souvenirs and ingredients, bringing a taste of Istria back home with us.
